When you think of Bugatti, you most likely think of its range of high-performance supercars, but back in the 1990s, the automaker created the Bugatti EB 112 sports sedan that you may never have heard of.

The EB 112 debuted as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1993.

The four-door fastback had a retro design, reminiscent of older Bugatti models, and came equipped with a powerful V12 engine.

But more than 30 years on from its original unveiling, the EB 112 is an elusive beast and it’s very unlikely you’ll see one on the road any time soon.

Bugatti is known for making some of the most exclusive – and expensive – cars in the world, such as the Tourbillon and the one-of-one La Voiture Noire that comes with an $18.7 million price tag.

However, while these rare cars are fairly well-known, the EB 112 is a different thing altogether.

The concept vehicle was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign and was created around the idea of a full-size saloon version of the EB 110 sports car.

The finished design was a nod to older models from the marque, such as the Type 57 Galibier.

The Bugatti EB 112 had a full carbon-fiber chassis and came with a 6.0 liter V12 engine that could pump out up to 450 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

The all-wheel drive vehicle could do 0-100km (0-62mph) in 4.3 seconds and had a top speed of 300km/h (186mph).

Only three of the EB 122s were ever made

When it was unveiled, the Bugatti EB 112 earned a bit of a mixed reception, with some folks a little put off by its unconventional looks – however, others loved the design.

Unfortunately, the concept car was never really given a real chance.

Just two short years after the EB 112 was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. went bankrupt.

Businessman Gildo Pallanca Pastor bought some assets belonging to the automaker, including a couple of unfinished EB 112s.

His company, Monaco Racing Team, completed two of the vehicles – fitting them with the same V12 engine that the prototype had.

One of the vehicles was painted black, while the other got a ‘Dark Anthracite’ exterior.

These two vehicles, along with the burgundy red prototype, are the only EB 112s to ever be made – making them the rarest sports sedans out there and a real piece of automotive history.
