Nothing says America quite like a good old-fashioned road trip, right?

For these YouTubers, the mission was to make it to New York City without using any gas.

They were instead hoping to make the journey on something you would usually keep in your kitchen – vegetable oil.

We’ve heard of a lot of pretty wacky ways to power a car.

Sure, at one point in the past, the idea of fueling your car with electricity or hydrogen probably seemed strange.

So maybe some of these other alternatives will catch on in the future.

Whether that be the water car or the sewage supercar, there are always creative new ideas coming down the pipeline. No pun intended.

But running a car on vegetable oil is a new one on us.

YouTube channel Airborne Entertainment made it their mission to get to NYC in a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit on used deep fryer oil.

Getting the oil into the container was a tricky job, as much of it ended up spilling onto the car’s hood.

At any rate, these guys had set up a pretty clever system.

Their DIY system was rigged with an auxiliary tank and heaters, allowing the car to switch from diesel to vegetable oil when in motion.

With about a gallon of vegetable oil at their disposal, they estimated that this would last them about 40 to 50 miles.

But that wasn’t enough to get them to New York City.

Were they able to make it to the Big Apple?

Along the way, they stopped off at a McDonald’s, an Arby’s, and a Wendy’s, hoping to borrow some used vegetable oil from the fast food joints.

They had no such luck, but finally struck oil – so to speak – at a greasy spoon diner.

There were vats of it sitting out back, apparently ‘contaminated with bacon’ according to one of the employees.

“We could go to California!” one of the YouTubers exclaimed when he laid eyes on the vats.

When they ran out of oil, they resorted to using a homemade sunflower seed oil press.

It’s slow, but it worked.

Ultimately, they made it to NYC.

“It smells like a deep fryer [in here],” the driver told a passerby.

New Yorkers must be accustomed to seeing some peculiar sights in their city, but even a car running on vegetable oil got heads turning.
