The latest iteration of its sustainable high-performance V6 engine produces a staggering 730 horsepower.

As a sustainable engine, this kind of power is almost unheard of.

Running on hydrogen, the car delivers the raw power you expect from gas-powered vehicles albeit with a more sustainable technology.

Alpine first showcased its hydrogen-powered supercar back in 2022.

Since then, the Alpenglow Hy6 concept car has evolved quite a bit.

The automaker showcased the latest iteration of the Hy6 at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This version of the Hy6 uses a 730hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces more than double the output of its previous configuration.

The Alpenglow Hy6 also has a top speed of over 330km/h, proving that the hydrogen powertrain could soon be competitive in motorsport.

But what makes the Alpine hydrogen engine so special?

Unlike an internal combustion engine, a hydrogen car uses fuel cells to produce electricity through a chemical process.

These kind of cars also need a battery and electric motor to power the vehicle, similar to a hybrid.

But the Alpenglow Hy6 maintains the ICE format while also producing reduced emissions through its hydrogen engine.

“With the development of this brand new Hy6 V6 engine, we are demonstrating our commitment to hydrogen research, which could herald motorsport applications with high-performance levels,” Alpine Motorsports Vice President Bruno Famin said.

“A solution for continuing to cultivate the passion for motor racing using a very noble V6 with remarkable specific power and a sound to thrill drivers and spectators with its maximum revs at 9,000rpm.”

It seems that Alpine is laying quite the groundwork for more sustainable high-performance cars in motorsports.
