A new Netflix series will get more women involved in F1 than ever before

Working with Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine, Netflix has produced a new series that finally puts the women of F1 in the spotlight.

The seven-part series will follow 15 young female drivers as they strive to make tracks in what has been an extremely male-dominated sport.

F1 Academy is run by Susie Wolff, who was the first woman in 22 years to participate in a Formula One weekend, and it was created to help get female drivers all the way from Formula Four up to Formula One.

The documentary will show that it’s not just race day for the F1 Academy drivers, it’s a chance to change the sport as we know it and finally put female drivers where they belong: the winner’s podium.

For far too long, Formula One has had the reputation of champagne-soaked men in racing jackets and supercars, but this new seven-part series from Netflix and Reece Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine is here to change the game.

The F1 Academy, run by the iconic ex-F1 driver Susie Wolff, was created to change the extremely male-dominated world of racing by helping young female drivers strive to do more than they ever were told was possible.

The goal is to get a female driver in Formula One, having worked from Formula Four upwards.

The documentary will follow 15 young drivers from all over the world and the emotions, victories, losses, friendships, and rivalries of race day.

Hello Sunshine is the perfect company to partner with, as the Witherspoon-led media brand has strived to turn the spotlight onto women in all different professions, as well as amplify the voices of female writers.

In a statement, Witherspoon said:

“As these dynamic and fearless drivers break barriers behind the wheel, we are excited to […] tell the stories of these powerhouse leaders. What we know is that when we put women at the center, people show up to watch.”

Up-and-coming racing stars like Abbi Pulling and Doriane Pin will be focused on throughout, and under Suzie Wolff hopefully it won’t be long before we see them in their own champagne-soaked racing jackets.

“We want to be the rocket fuel that drives female participation in our sport, both on and off the track,” Wolff herself said.

And these women will be taking the fast track to changing the sport for future generations.
