This man was fined after he left his car in a free parking space whilst he went on vacation – only for it to have turned into a paid parking space while he was gone.

Mattia Bologna, a 37-year-old nurse from Italy, had parked his car legally in front of the Fano Sports Park.

When he returned from vacation, he found that he had been hit with a fine for parking in a blue-lined parking area.

That’s one way to end your trip on a sour note.

Mattia Bologna was heading on vacation and needed somewhere to park his car for the week that he was gone.

He decided to park up in front of Fano Sports Park, as he was legally allowed to park in the white spaces available.

However, when he came back, the lines had turned blue.

This meant that his car was no longer allowed to be parked there.

And that also meant he was hit with a fine.

The ‘No Parking’ sign had been put up on July 12 – he had left the country on the 7th and wouldn’t return until the 14th.

Despite providing evidence to show that he was out of the country, the police weren’t swayed in their opinion.

This, understandably, left him feeling disappointed.

“I’ve always respected the rules and would never dream of contesting a ticket without reason,” Bologna told Italian newspaper il Resto del Carlino.

“But here it seems there’s been a lack of willingness to listen.”

He decided to pay the fine, concluding that the law was on the side of the traffic warden.

The fine of 29 euros was paid within a week, so no further penalties were incurred.

“It’s not a question of money,” Bologna said.

“But of principle.”

He advised that anyone going on vacation leave their car in a private courtyard or garage, not on the street.

“The signs change from day to day, and you risk finding yourself in a situation like mine,” Bologna warned.

“It’s truly unfortunate.”

We’ll say.

There’s a lesson in this for all of us – a free parking space doesn’t stay free forever, and a paid parking space may be waiting for you when you get back.

It’s never fun getting a fine

At one point or another, most drivers have gotten a fine for something.

The reasons for which drivers incur these penalties differ massively.

For one multi-millionaire in Finland, his $129,000 fine came for a speeding offence.

As for soccer player Kingsley Coman, he was fined for driving a Mercedes G-Class rather than an Audi – yes, really.

And who could forget the Lamborghini Huracán Performante owner who was hit with an $800 fine for a very obscure reason?
