Just as engineers have been pushing the technological age as far as possible with leading supercars, the aviation experts have been trying to crack down on air pollution in similar ways.

With private jets and domestic carriers being one of the biggest air polluters in the vehicular industry, the need for electric aircraft is growing.

Now, Beta Technologies has made history by being the first company to fly an all-electric plane from one airport to another.

The race to get an electric aircraft to take off above American soil has been a very competitive run.

NASA has recently made a hybrid-electric plane, opting to create a passenger carrier alongside magniX.

UK companies have been hot on developing smaller two-seaters made for personal use, and are targeting the US soon.

But beating them all is Beta Technologies and its electric aircraft, known as Alia CX300.

On June 4, the almost silent plane made a trip from Long Island’s MacArthur airport to JFK in New York, after six years of development. It then became the first electric aircraft to land in the city.

According to an interview on CBS News, the 45-minute flight from Long Island to Queens cost ‘about eight dollars in electricity.’

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to certify Beta Technologies’ airplane within the next two years. That would give it wider parameters to fly around New York.

It’ll only be a matter of years before we see them cropping up all over the globe.

However, the problem that plagues electric cars also affects electric aircraft. Namely, lack of infrastructure.

In order to get the planes airborne frequently, airports need to have the right infrastructure in place. That means making sure charging kits and spare parts are available.

Technically, the Alia CX300 isn’t the first electric airplane in the US. But it is the first one that will be used domestically.

One man did beat everyone and create his own homemade electric airplane, but we’ll let Beta take the accolades nonetheless.
