Apple was the primary financier for F1, which comes out on June 27 in the US.

As such, the company developed a special camera to capture onboard footage, as Formula 1’s broadcast camera weren’t up to scratch.

Whilst the film is still yet to come out, this news makes us very excited to see how it looks on the big screen.

How Apple stepped in to take Brad Pitt’s F1 movie to the next level

The movie industry is a fast moving business, and things are constantly evolving.

Whether its the 22 replica Formula 1 cars that Netflix made for Senna or the technology used to make the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, studios are always finding ways to impress us.

Even when it comes to stunts, the boundaries are being pushed, as demonstrated by the training actors in Top Gun: Maverick undertook.

And everybody’s busy, even the costume department – just take a look at what they worked up for Timothée Chalamet in Dune.

When it came to Brad Pitt’s upcoming F1 movie, Apple wanted to up the ante.

The company, which finances the Joseph Kosinski directed film, developed a special camera using the guts of a iPhone.

This is because the Formula 1 broadcast cameras weren’t up to scratch for Hollywood standards.

Different cameras were already in operation in different positions on the APX GP cars used in the films.

However, something special was needed for the camera that captures the overhead onboard shot.

With the standard F1 cameras producing footage that was of a low quality for the silver screen, a workaround was needed.

Ultimately, it was decided for the camera system of an iPhone to be packed into one of the winglet pods that sits on the air intake above the driver’s head.

YouTuber Bobby Tonelli took a closer look at the technology.

What can we expect with this camera?

The new camera contains several components – an iPhone 15 Pro’s camera sensor, backed up by one of Apple’s A-series processors.

That’s not forgetting an iPhone battery and a neutral density filter that controls the intensity of the light reaching the sensor.

Apple has also ensured that the unit could withstand the stresses that come with being on top of an extremely fast car.

With these cars hitting up to 220mph in straights and pulling over 5G on corners, it’s important to have all bases covered.

The camera can’t be controlled remotely however, so an iPad had to be attached through a USB-C cable.

They would then to start and stop the recording themselves.

We can’t wait to see how it looks once the film hits theaters.
