Mars: The “Red Planet” of the Solar System

Mars is an extremely unique planet within our Solar System.

It gets its nickname, the ‘Red Planet’, thanks to the vast amount of iron minerals in the dirt.

Those minerals then rust – or oxidize – which gives the surface its famous red color.

The Ancient Romans named it in honour of their god of war, because the red surface was equated to the image of blood.

The Ancient Egyptians before them referred to the plant as ‘Her Desher’, which translates to ‘the red one.’

Interestingly, Mars is the only planet to which NASA has deployed rovers to explore the desert landscape.

NASA captures clear images of The Red One

Recently, NASA released some truly staggering images from Mars itself.

NASA’s rover modules have been gathering images and data for some time now.

During one winter day, the module took some of the clearest pictures of the planet yet.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory – the JPL – said that state-of-the-art cameras onboard rovers Perseverance and Curiosity were able to capture the exceptional images.

“These stunning panoramas give us a new appreciation of Mars’ geology and environmental history.

“They help us understand how Mars evolved and where we should focus future exploration,” Dr. Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division, said.

With range extending over 18 miles, the images will serve as a massively valuable resource for future exploration of the planet.

Future exploration firmly in the works

NASA has confirmed that, despite these recent successes, the plan is only to continue their progress.

The agency, in collaboration with other bodies such as the European Space Agency – AKA the ESA – has set some big goals.

In fact, plans to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s are apparently in the works.

The Mars rover modules have already covered several highlights, including the Jezero and Gale Craters, the mountain Olympus Mons, and the planet’s ‘Grand Canyon’, Valles Marineris.

These explorations not only further human understanding, but also serve to potentially establish future landing zones for humanity’s arrival on the planet in the near future.

Either way, we’re very excited by the work NASA is doing – on Mars and beyond.
